DRC: New LRA attacks cause the displacement of civilians

Tuesday, 01/03/2011 The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) expressed deep concern Tuesday over the spate of violent attacks against civilians perpetrated by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). "Since January, the LRA intensified its attacks in the Eastern Province. It killed 35 people, kidnapped 104 others and caused the displacement of more than 17,000 people. Since the beginning of the year, we received reports of 52 raids by the LRA, "said Tuesday a spokesman for the UNHCR, Melissa Fleming, at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
Since 2008, approximately 290,000 people were uprooted in the Eastern Province. In addition, 20,000 Congolese have sought refuge in southern Sudan, while 3,500 others have fled the Central African Republic.
